Until recently, Nic Fenn was a Cadet Flight Sergeant with 249 Hailsham,(The Millennium) Squadron, Royal Air Force Air Cadets. He has been accepted into the RAF with a view to being trained as a fast jet pilot. He is currently partway through Officer training at the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell. At 19, he is the youngest member of this in-take.
In the photograph, taken at a presentation evening before he left the squadron, he is being awarded a trophy for most promising cadet by the Squadron President, the Lord Lieutenant for East Sussex.
Flight Sergeant Fenn joined the cadets at age 13 and stayed for 5 years. During this time he took full advantage of the opportunities offered by the Corps, attending annual camps, at RAF Kinloss, RAF Shawbury and RAF Halton. He was always a willing volunteer at Local community events, fundraising for the squadron, local Royal British Legion and RAF Association and the annual 249 RAF Squadron reunion at North Weald in Essex. Flight Sergeant Fenn represented the squadron at Athletics and swimming. Naturally, he took all opportunities to fly and flew in both gliders and the powered training aircraft. Adventure training was a favourite activity; including climbing, canoeing, raft building and taking part in the Southdowns challenge (a 40k navigation exercise along the South Downs). His proudest moments would always be on parade with 249 Squadron at Parades such as Remembrance Day, weather as the squadron Banner bearer, Wreath bearer or as a member of the squad.
Flight Sergeant Fen said, “I have learned so much from being a cadet, I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for 249 Squadron and the staff who have helped and encouraged me to reach my goal”
Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Craig Thomson RAF VR(T) said “Staff and cadets from 249 Squadron wish him all the best in his new adventure and look forward to following his career over the years to come”
