The Lord-Lieutenant attended a ceremony at The Royal British Legion Mais House Care Home in Bexhill-On-Sea, Friday 29th July and presented The Chevalier de l’ Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur to Mr Leonard Alfred Simmonds.
Mr Leonard Alfred Simmonds, aged 92, is a resident of Mais House, Care Home. Mr Simmonds served with the RAF in the Second World War. He contributed to the liberation of France as a member of a mobile radar unit in France reporting air movement to Base Sector on a twenty-four hour basis. The work Leonard and his unit carried out was vital to securing Allied air superiority. For his service to France, Leonard was presented the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur by Capt Francois Jean Consul Honoraire de France which is the is the highest French order for military and civil merits. The event was also attended by Mayor of Bexhill, Mr Simmonds family and friends, senior managers of the Royal British Legion’s care services team, and staff of Mais House.
