On Saturday last (29th September) the Lord Lieutenant attended the Confederation of Cinque Ports’ annual Speaker’s Day this year held in Hastings. The Speaker this year is the Mayor of Hastings, Nigel Sinden who lead the procession through the streets of Hastings from St Mary in the Castle to St Clement’s Church where the annual service was held. An ancient tradition dating back certainly more than 500 years. The Confederation is known as the cradle of the Royal Navy.
There are seven towns in the Confederation three of which (Hastings, Winchelsea and Rye) are in East Sussex. The Speakership changes every year and this year it is the turn of Hasting. Next year it will be Winchelsea. In the procession as can be seen from this photograph of those who attended is the Lord Lieutenant, the Mayor and the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, the Admiral Lord Boyce.
