Commemoration to Second Lieutenant Ernest Beal VC
On Friday last the Lord Lieutenant unveiled a memorial tablet to Second Lieutenant Ernest Beal VC at the War Memorial in Old Steine, Brighton.
Lieutenant Beal was born and brought up in Brighton and fought valiantly in the Great War with three regiments, the Green Howards, the Sussex Yeomen and the Royal Sussex Regiment. Present at the ceremony were soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment, the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment and the Gurkha Band, Civic dignitaries and members representing the Green Howards, The Royal Sussex Regiment and the Sussex Yeomanry together with veterans and members of the public. The Lord Lieutenant was pleased at the opportunity to pay tribute to such a brave Brightonian. As with all who gave their lives in that conflict and those conflicts since. We will remember them.
